Taking inspiration from cobblestones and 19th century train cases, the debut collection of tightly curated accessories embrace ethos of hand-craftsmanship and local manufacturing. Our leather goods are crafted using genuine European leather and premium grade exotic skins, finished with hand-stitched details, and custom-plated with nickel ox hardware to achieve a decomposed, organic look cued from cobblestones and the gritty streets of New York. Each bag is named after a street in downtown New York that holds a personal connection with the designer. Our design sensibilities reflect the principle of form follows function while revisiting elements of the past and bringing it to the present. Soon after, the collection of body adornments followed. This evolved organically as we continue to grow while still keeping the spirit of 1 Per Diem of producing locally.

1 Per Diem takes each working day as a creative and mindful process in achieving highly crafted pieces.

We believe in sustainability and keeping the integrity of our products by doing small productions at a family-owned factory in New York. This also allows us to create made-to-order pieces. By manufacturing locally, we are able to oversee production closely and at the same time support the local fashion industry.

Inspired by the voyage of literary traveler Isabella Bird, Philippines-born Vanessa Espinosa traveled off the beaten path, packed her life in two suitcases and moved to the U.S. 10 years ago. She transitioned from a career in diplomacy in Washington, D.C. then came to New York in 2005 to pursue her creative endeavors. She believes in slow and steady progression and turning points.

Vanessa attended and graduated at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She has worked in various fields of fashion industry from production to sales and credits her experience at Comme des Garcons and Issey Miyake for honing her eye for detail.

Vanessa envisioned 1 Per Diem as a brand that celebrates quality, individuality and hand-craftsmanship. 1 Per Diem is an extension of her and is created to share a common ground for like-minded individuals. Her vision comes full circle as each piece is created locally and eventually finds a happy home enjoyed fully by its owner. Constantly inspired by city living and wanderlust, she moves forward to build this emerging brand to create accessories that will love you back. After becoming friends at the Fashion Institute Vienna, Hetzendorf, Ida Steixner and Lena Krampf quickly made the transition from graduates in 2008 to entrepreneurs in 2010 when they founded their own fashion label meshit. In addition to formal training, both gathered hands-on experience in fashion and production through internships at established companies: Steixner with renowned Austrian designer Claudia Brandmair and Krampf with traditional Viennese shoe-manufacturer Ludwig Reiter.

The brand name is a play on the verb “to mesh“ and that is exactly what the girls do best: combining clean shapes and special detailing by fitting together various elements and concepts into one unique design. From the get-go, their target group was clear: an urban, fashion-conscious crowd that enjoys blending cultural elements and fashion statements together in order to come up with their very own, individual style.

Tapping into a variety of sources for inspiration, meshit is firmly rooted in youth culture and - as the name of the label suggests - plays with contrasts: tight and oversized volumes, androgynous shapes and sensual fabrics, classic attire and edgy finishes. Collections include easy-to-wear outfits as well as more singular pieces for the fashion daring.

We traveled to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Stockholm once again this season to find some hidden gems amongst the plethora of emerging talent from the Swedish capital. In a sea of ready-to-wear collections, we found a pearl with Altewai Saome. The Swedish-born Natalia Alewai and Randa Saome, oringally from Malmö, worked and studied in both Paris and Milan before heading back to their hometown to open their label and flagship boutique. We were lucky enough to catch their collection of innovative dresses and separates made from unconventional materials: neoprene, perforated leather and plastics. The craftsmanship and construction was strikingly couture - which was unique in Stockholm this season. The color palette, too, was unique. Mauve, brilliant reds, and bright limes were juxtaposed on stark black and white. See some photos courtesy of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

We love the gender-bending, outrageous, self-proclaimed "Queen Diva", Big Freedia.

Sissy Bounce is a variation of New Orleans' Bounce, a unique style of hip hop consisting of repetitive melody and a quick call and response. The experience is then accompanied by several (usually female) scantily clad dancers lined on stage emulating the repetitive beats with their bodies. This hypersexualized hip hop takes a new form when performed by transvestites and gender-queers.

More of a performance art than a live show, Big Freedia is not to be missed.

Our buds over in Sweden, The Local Firm, opened up their first brick and mortar store this year. This Södermalm boutique is situated near Nytorget - the island's best shopping district and arguably the hippest in all of Stockholm. We love The Local Firm's use of a monochromatic color pallet and geometric, almost architectural patterns. With menswear, womenswear and accessories, this brand embodies the spirit of modern Swedish design, and all of its minimal and conceptual sensibilities.

"Project For Empty Space: A Pop-Up Vision was created by us- the co-curators Jasmine Wahi (Jasmine Wahi Contemporary Art Advisory) and Meenakshi Thirukode (MT Productions) in early 2010. The project was born out of the need to bring contemporary art out of traditionally ‘high-brow’ neighborhoods to the people of New York. In the wake of economic flummox the art world has taken a financial hit, so we (Jasmine W. and Meenakshi T.) took advantage of the downturn in investment and speculative buying to bring really good art back to New York- literally, back down to ground level…

As of June 2010 we have chosen Tehniyet Masood, local New York artist, as our main installation artist. She will be creating a site-specific art installation made out of organic and recycled materials. Masood will be creating a large building-like structure in an outdoor space using found/reclaimed materials from all over New York. The purpose of this project is two fold- to challenge the artist to create work that is inspired by the environment and neighborhood around her and to also foster community interest in the project. We hope that the local community will take an interest in the project and thus influence the creation of the work that the artist makes. Additionally, we hope that the audiences ability to watch the progression of the space go from empty to art-filled will inspire a broader appreciation of contemporary art."

We are thrilled to announce to US launch of Berlin-based line D ON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGERS. Our friends Jen Gelpin and Kyle Callanan moved to Berlin several years ago from Canada and New Zealand, respectively. This design duo is a force to be reckoned with. Having been featured in WWD, AnOther Magazine, Italian Vogue, Interview Magazine, and Diane Parnet's blog already in their 3rd season, the media seems to love what they are doing.

The two use high-end materials: wools, silks, quality leathers, soft jerseys to create geometric garments that are usually convertible. In such a tough economy, who doesn't want a multifunctional piece? Check out their incredible price point, too.
